If your shoes are the first thing you kick off when you get home, it's time for a better pair. Comfortable walking shoes don't have to look sporty or clunky. Here's what to look for, so your feet still feel good after a day at the shops, a long lunch or chasing the grandkids around the park.
1. A cushioned, flexible sole
Press your thumb into the sole. It should give a little, then spring back. A thicker, lightweight sole soaks up more of each step than a thin, hard one, and a bit of flex at the ball of the foot lets you walk naturally.
2. A soft upper that moves with you
Knit and mesh uppers stretch gently around your foot, so there's less pinching across the toes. They also let air in, which helps on warm Australian days.
3. Easy on, easy off
Slip-on styles and wide openings mean no bending and fiddling with laces. Look for a padded heel collar so the shoe stays put without rubbing.
4. Room for your toes
A rounded toe box gives your toes space to spread out. If you're between sizes, size up rather than squeeze in.
